Gończy Polski vom Pauelsgraben

11 FEBRUARY 2021 · SECOND LITTER

B litter vom Pauelsgraben

My B litter was born in the winter of 2021. The mating of my Dana with the hunting-tested Ivo Gończa Ostoja produced 15 healthy, lively puppies. This litter was very special to me – both because of its size and because of the intensive weeks I shared with my wife, Dana and the puppies.

THE MATING

Hunting performance meets a proven maternal line

For the B litter, Dana was mated with Ivo Gończa Ostoja. This stud dog, used for breeding in Germany, had an HD A1 assessment and had demonstrated his hunting abilities in the association blood-tracking test and association flushing test. His abilities and test results made him a very good match for Dana and for what I hoped to achieve with this mating.

The aim of this mating was to produce healthy, resilient, handler-focused Gończy Polski with a passion for hunting, sound temperaments and close family bonds. The planning therefore focused on the well-balanced overall qualities of both parents rather than on individual traits.

15 puppies on a winter’s day

The pregnancy was largely uncomplicated, but coincided with an unusually cold, snowy winter. In the early hours of 11 February 2021, Dana gave birth to the first puppy; the last followed at around 11 pm. By the end, 15 healthy, lively puppies of roughly the same size lay in the whelping box.

Such a large litter was a special challenge for both Dana and me. That is precisely why this day remains unforgettable: it called for calm, attention and a clear daily routine – and also showed how reliably Dana cared for her puppies.

An intensive start

With 15 puppies, additional care began immediately after birth. Together with my wife, I weighed every puppy three times a day and carefully recorded its development. Afterwards, the puppies received supplementary food as needed. Both our families gave my wife and me substantial support during this demanding time and helped us maintain the closely scheduled routine throughout those early weeks.

All the puppies developed very well. Alongside care and weight monitoring, their upbringing included family contact, different surfaces, everyday sounds, exercise, environmental stimuli and age-appropriate introductions to hunting. This allowed them to begin their new lives curious, confident and well prepared.
