Gończy Polski recall: building responsiveness alongside hunting drive
I start recall training with my Gończy Polski early, using a clear cue and rewarding the dog for coming back. I use the German words “Hier” or “Hierher” and begin in straightforward conditions. Here I explain the training steps, rewards and gradual introduction of distractions. Even a well-practised recall has limits, especially when the dog has game in sight.

A clear cue from the beginning
I start recall training early. The young dog should learn what the chosen word means and associate it with a positive experience. Using one consistent cue with your dog is helpful. The precise word matters less than teaching its meaning clearly and in manageable steps.
Start with straightforward situations in which the dog can focus on its handler. Distractions can then be increased gradually. Coming when called in the garden is a useful foundation; it does not yet show that the same dog will respond just as well when it encounters fresh game scent.
Make returning worthwhile
I reward my dogs with food when they return on recall. Ordinary dry dog food is often sufficient for my dogs. For another dog, a special treat reserved exclusively for training may be more motivating. The deciding factor is which reward that individual dog finds appealing.
I want the dog to associate coming back with success. A suitable reward need not be expensive or elaborate. Watch your dog: does it accept the reward eagerly and remain interested? That tells you more than choosing the most unusual treats.
Small steps and realistic expectations
My general approach to training is that less is often more. A short exercise that ends well is worth more than repeated attempts during which the dog loses interest. If something is not working on a particular day, there is no need to force it.
For recall, this means matching the setting and difficulty to the dog’s current level. A secure training environment helps avoid situations for which the foundations are not yet established. If an exercise becomes too difficult, take a step back and build up again from there. I explain how I combine short sessions with training goals in my Gończy Polski training guide.
Training and free time can be different
Caya recognises whether we are heading out to train or enjoying free time in the garden or hunting ground. These distinctions develop through everyday life together and familiar routines.
Free time does not mean that staying responsive and returning when called suddenly cease to matter. With a hunting dog especially, the circumstances determine how much freedom is appropriate. Training level, surroundings and the presence of game all need to be considered together.
Game remains a particular challenge
Recall works well for us in everyday situations. However, when the dog has game directly in sight and is already giving chase, it can become much more difficult. An honest account of life with a hunting dog needs to acknowledge this.
A trained recall does not guarantee that a Gończy Polski can immediately be called away from every hunting situation. I would never test a dog’s progress by allowing uncontrolled off-lead access to game. Taking the dog’s limitations seriously is part of keeping it safe.
Responsiveness grows through life together
The bond with my dogs develops through living together, shared experiences and work in the hunting ground. For me, that relationship is the basis of our teamwork. A specific recall cue still needs practice alongside it.
Starting early, communicating clearly and allowing enough time creates a useful foundation. An experienced handler’s perspective can also help, particularly when distractions make it difficult to regain the dog’s attention. Every dog starts with different strengths and challenges; training needs to suit the individual. Returning voluntarily during a search is a separate behaviour. I describe my observations in search range, returning and the bond with the handler.
