Gończy Polski: costs, equipment and time commitment
Before bringing home a Gończy Polski, I would plan for food, insurance, veterinary care and equipment. Time for everyday life together and hunting training matters just as much. I cannot give you a fixed total. Here I share what I would include in those preparations, with Caya’s food costs as a concrete example from my own life.

How much does a Gończy Polski puppy cost?
We discuss the price of a Gończy Polski puppy from my kennel personally. We also talk through the handover arrangements and whether a puppy would suit your everyday life and hunting plans. You can find the current status on my planned litter page. To get to know each other, please send me a puppy enquiry.
My puppies’ health comes first for me. You will take home a vaccinated, purebred puppy with an EU pet passport and an original VDH pedigree. You are welcome to ask about the documents when we first meet. My guide to visiting a breeder and discussing puppy documents can help you prepare questions for our conversation.
When planning, consider four areas separately: the puppy’s purchase price, initial equipment, ongoing expenses and a reserve for unexpected veterinary costs, and time for everyday care and training. The following sections help you assess these points for your own circumstances.
What I spend on Caya’s food
I feed Caya Josera dry food. A 15-kilogram bag costs around €50 to €60 and lasts us a good month.
These figures reflect my experience with Caya. They are not a recommendation for feeding quantities and cannot be treated as fixed monthly costs for another dog.
Basic equipment should suit everyday life
To begin with, your dog needs a suitable place to sleep, such as a dog bed or blanket. You will also need a lead and a well-fitting collar or harness. Think about what you will actually use in everyday life.
Equipment for a working hunting dog can be expensive. Even so, I would not buy everything at once. A considered set of essentials and a clear idea of the dog’s future work will help you choose. For practical preparations at home before collection, see my checklist for bringing a puppy home.
What I plan for hunting work
For me, a tracking lead is part of the training equipment. Depending on what you want to practise, training dummies can also be useful. Access to hunting ground where you can work together is particularly valuable. No piece of equipment can replace the opportunity to practise.
I also recommend a dog tracking device. My dogs keep returning to me, but being able to locate them gives me additional reassurance if something happens. When choosing equipment, what matters to me is whether it suits the intended use.
Check insurance and ongoing expenses individually
For Caya, I use insurance cover available through the Saxony-Anhalt state hunting association. I am a member and she is a hunting dog that has passed hunting tests. If you would like to use a similar option, check registration, eligibility and the scope of cover directly with the association.
For ongoing planning, I would consider food, insurance, veterinary expenses and occasional equipment replacement separately. I cannot give you a reliable total: dogs, living circumstances and the amount of hunting work vary too much.
Make time for everyday life together and training
For training, I would first consider what you want to achieve with your dog and what opportunities you have to practise. That makes it easier to decide which equipment and support will be useful. You do not need to buy everything before your puppy arrives. I explain my approach in the guide to training from a puppy’s arrival to the first hunting test.
Alongside money, I always consider available time. If you are a hunter or preparing to become one and want to bring home a puppy, ask yourself honestly when you will have time for everyday life together, training and shared experiences. Even the best equipment cannot replace that time. For a practical example of care, activity and rest, read about our everyday life with Caya outside the hunting season.
